Yosemite Valley, Tunnel View Winter Purple light
I set out to capture the beauty of Yosemite Valley in the dead of winter, an atmospheric river having just passed through. My trusty camera in hand, I braved the frigid temperatures and ventured into the unknown, a lone wolf amidst the snow-covered peaks. The stillness of the morning was only broken by the distant howl of a coyote, a fitting soundtrack for my journey.
As I journeyed further into the valley, I encountered obstacles along the way. My fingers grew numb from the cold, but I refused to let it hinder my craft. I pressed on, determined to capture the essence of this breathtaking landscape. The crisp mountain air was wet with snow and rain, making every shot a challenge, but also a reward.
As the sun began to rise, I found myself in a precarious situation, parked in a spot that I should not have been. I wondered if I would get into trouble, but the stunning beauty that surrounded me was all the reassurance I needed. I snapped shot after shot, capturing the first rays of light as they cascaded across the peaks and valleys, illuminating the landscape with a golden glow.
The journey was not without its hardships, but the rewards were immense. I had overcome the obstacles and emerged victorious, capturing the magic of Yosemite in the middle of winter. The memory of this journey will stay with me forever, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to witness and document such a mystical and captivating place.

About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and tilted to form its unique slopes, which increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in the formation of deep, narrow canyons. About one million years ago glaciers formed at higher elevations which eventually melted and moved downslope, cutting and sculpting the U-shaped valley that attracts so many visitors to its scenic vistas.
European American settlers first entered Yosemite Valley itself in 1851. There are earlier instances of other travelers entering the Valley but James D. Savage is credited with discovering the area that became Yosemite National Park. Despite Savage and other white men claiming their discovery of Yosemite, the region and Valley itself has been inhabited for nearly 4,000 years, although humans may have visited the area as long as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Yosemite was critical to the development of the national park idea. Galen Clark and others lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development, ultimately leading to President Abraham Lincoln signing the Yosemite Grant of 1864 which declared Yosemite as federally preserved land. It was not until 1890 when John Muir led a successful movement which had Congress establish Yosemite Valley and its surrounding areas as a National Park. This helped pave the way for the National Park System.
