Victoria Falls Devil's Cataract, Zimbabwe
I set out in with a driver in his beat-up old taxi from my hotel on the Chobe River in Botswana and crossed the border into Zimbabwe, on my way to the Zambezi river and Victoria Falls. Given this name by Stanley Livingstone, the locals call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders." Going from a Botswana, a country with a vibrant economy into the failed state that is Zimbabwe is a stark reminder of how quickly things can go from good to bad. Once "the breadbasket" of Africa, Zimbabwe is now a shell of its former self, with gas lines that stretch for days, and roads in horrible shape.
This is a stunning location. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, Victoria Falls are classified the largest, based on its combined width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft)and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world's largest sheet of falling water. Victoria Falls are roughly twice the height of North America's Niagara Falls and well over twice its width.
It is a once-in-a-lifetime wonder to experience.
On this side of the Zambezi, I'm looking at the Devil's Cataract, as the waters roar and spray is everywhere. It's a challenge to keep my camera lens dry and clear of water spots. As I step closer to the edge of the falls, the noise of the water is deafening. The spray is thick, and I can feel the droplets of water on my skin. The force of the falls is incredible, and I can feel it vibrating through my entire body. It's as if the power of the falls is trying to pull me in, urging me to get closer and experience it fully.
I take a deep breath and steady my camera. I want to capture this moment in time, freeze it forever so that others can see what I'm seeing. The colours of the water as it crashes down, the mist that hangs in the air, and the sheer power of the falls are all incredible.
I take shot after shot, trying to capture the essence of the falls. I want to show the world what it feels like to stand at the edge of one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world.
As I walk along the edge of the falls, I feel the excitement building inside me. This is what I live for, the thrill of capturing these incredible moments in time. This is why I became a landscape photographer, to show the world the beauty that surrounds us, to inspire people to get out and experience it for themselves.
I turn my face to the falls, feeling the mist on my skin, and take another shot. This is it, the moment that will live forever, captured in a photograph. And as I stand there, feeling the power of the falls, I know that this is only the beginning of my adventure. There are so many more wonders out there, waiting to be explored and photographed, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead.
