Victoria Falls Bridge
I've spent hours lugging my camera gear through Victoria National Park, to the famous bridge that connects the two countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia across the Zambezi river.
The bridge was the brainchild of Cecil Rhodes, part of his grand and unfulfilled Cape to Cairo railway scheme, even though he never visited the falls and died before construction of the bridge began. Rhodes is recorded as instructing the engineers to "build the bridge across the Zambezi where the trains, as they pass, will catch the spray of the Falls"
Constructed from steel, the bridge is 198 metres (650 ft) long, with a main arch spanning 156.50 metres (513.5 ft), at a height of 128 metres (420 ft) above the lower water mark of the river in the gorge below. It carries a road, railway and footway. The bridge is the only rail link between Zambia and Zimbabwe and one of only three road links between the two countries.
As I stood there, my eyes fixed on the immense Victoria Falls, my heart raced with excitement. I had never seen such a natural wonder before, and I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by its grandeur.
The roar of the water was deafening, and the mist from the falls engulfed me, making it difficult to see. But as a landscape photographer, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to capture the essence of this breathtaking scene.
I began to set up my camera, carefully adjusting the settings to ensure I captured the perfect shot. As I looked through the viewfinder, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I was in my element, doing what I loved, and nothing else mattered.
As the day wore on, I moved from one location to another, taking in every angle and every detail. I watched as the sun slowly descended in the sky, casting a warm golden light over the falls, making the water sparkle and dance.
I stayed until the last light faded, not wanting to miss a single moment of this incredible experience. And as I packed up my gear and began the journey back to my accommodation, I knew that this was a day that I would never forget.
Victoria Falls had captured my heart, and I felt privileged to have been able to capture its beauty through my lens. It was a reminder that in the chaos and busyness of life, it's important to take a step back and appreciate the natural wonders that surround us.
