Point Arena Lighthouse Stairs, Mendocino Coast
The Mendocino Coast embraced me in its frigid arms with a biting cold wind as I embarked on my trip to Point Arena, the farthest west point of the lower 48 states. As a landscape photographer, I sought to capture the rugged beauty that the California coastline had to offer on this chilly morning. With camera in hand, I embarked upon a pilgrimage to the historic Point Arena Lighthouse, a true survivor, standing as a testament to the passage of time.
My heart raced with anticipation as I approached the lighthouse, my gaze fixated on the majestic structure standing tall against the roaring ocean. Built in 1870, it had weathered countless storms and witnessed the ebb and flow of generations. The steps leading up to the top were steeped in history, having been forged in the fires of San Francisco's Gold Rush ironworks. These very stairs had witnessed the birth and rebirth of the lighthouse, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1906 and then rebuilt.
As I began my ascent, each step echoed with the echoes of the past. The stairs seemed to stretch infinitely upwards, a testament to the endurance required to reach the pinnacle of this lighthouse.
