As a landscape photographer, I wanted to show the power and mystery of the California coast in Morro Bay. The rock there is massive, towering over the ocean like a giant sentinel. I wanted to capture it in a way that felt raw and real—so I chose to shoot in black and white. No colors to soften it, just the stark power of rock and water. But for days, thick morning fog had kept everything hidden, blurring the lines and stealing the sharpness I needed.
This morning, I rose early once again, hoping today would be different. I stood on the beach, waiting. Then, as the sun began to rise, the fog shifted. It thinned just enough for the rock to appear, solid and dark against the pale mist. The ocean below was calm but strong, its waves quietly lapping at the shore, almost whispering. It was a perfect contrast—the strong, silent rock and the restless sea, both revealed in the soft gray tones of dawn.
I framed the shot and clicked the shutter. The black and white image brought out the true nature of the scene—the rock, bold and steady, and the ocean, shimmering like steel in the morning light. The picture captured their strength, stripped of color but full of life and energy.
