Patience, persistence, and timing
To create art, I start with a good photograph. That requires being in the right place at the right time (which can mean getting up long before dawn to capture the morning light, or standing in 2 feet of snow). It requires persistence. The light may not be right, or the sun is behind clouds, or the animals aren't there. So often, I return again and again until the conditions are just right. It requires patience. I've often stood with my eye to my camera lens waiting for an animal to peek out from where they're hiding, or take off and move, or look my way.
And all that is just to capture a photo. But the camera is just a tool. It can't "see" what my mind's eye sees. To bring out the art requires long hours at the computer getting the image just right.
And all of this took years of practice.

Eastern Sierra Sunrise, Convict Lake
Convict Lake was originally carved out by glaciers. It is known for its turquoise-blue water, the dramatic mountains (including Mount Morrison) that surround it, and trout fishing. The Paiute Indians of the region are said to have called it Wit-sa-nap. The Paiute tribe called this lake “Wit-sa-nap.” They believed that lake Wit-sa-nap was created by the Great Spirit as a safe haven for the magical fish—infused with the spirits of children—that swim through the surrounding mountains streams. American settlers renamed the lake after an incident on September 23, 1871, in which a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City, Nevada, and took refuge near the lake. They were pursued by a posse, and after it caught up to the convicts, a shootout followed, in which a number of both posse members and convicts were killed or wounded. The remaining convicts who survived initially escaped but were eventually captured to be taken back to prison.
On this particular morning, I set out before dawn, driven by the desire to capture the ethereal stillness of the mountains in the soft embrace of sunrise. The journey was not for the faint of heart; it required a spirit of perseverance and an unyielding passion for the art. The darkness enveloped me like a cloak, and the road unfolded beneath my tires, guiding me toward my destination of Convict Lake.
As I approached the lake, a breathtaking sight greeted my tired eyes. The sky blazed with hues of pink and blue, casting a magical glow across the horizon. Nature's canvas had already begun its masterpiece, painting the heavens in a symphony of colors. But alas, time had not been on my side, and the sunrise had unfolded faster than I had anticipated.
A sense of urgency consumed me as I hurriedly set up my gear. I sought to capture the fleeting moments before they slipped away into the realm of memories. The wind, however, had its own plans for that morning. It descended upon the lake with a ferocity that shook the very ground beneath my feet. The water rose, agitated, and the once tranquil surface now bore whitecaps that crashed against the shore.
Determined not to let the wind defeat me, I planted my tripod firmly into the earth, hoping it would withstand the tempest. With my camera clutched tightly in my hands, I braced myself against the gale. The wind bellowed like a mighty beast, challenging my resolve and threatening to steal my shot.
But there, in the midst of the chaos, I found a moment of clarity. It was a realization that, in the face of adversity, true beauty often reveals itself. The lake, once a mirror of serenity, now showcased its untamed spirit, reflecting the vibrant sky above.
I adjusted my camera settings, embracing the unpredictable elements that surrounded me. I allowed the wind to guide my lens, capturing the dance of the clouds and the fury of the lake. The resulting images held a raw and untamed beauty, a testament to the power of nature and my resilience as an artist.
As the wind howled and the camera clicked, I found myself connected to something greater than myself. In that moment, I became part of the landscape, intertwined with the wind, the lake, and the mountains. It was a reminder that life, like the weather, is unpredictable, but it is in embracing the unexpected that we find our truest selves.
As the morning sun rose higher in the sky, I packed my gear, grateful for the experience I had been granted. The wind may have blown my tripod across the trail, but it could not topple my spirit. I walked away from Convict Lake that day, knowing that I had captured something remarkable—not just in my photographs, but also within my soul.
The wind and weather had tested me, but they had also taught me a valuable lesson: to find beauty even in the midst of chaos, and to always remain steadfast in pursuit of my passion. The Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains would forever hold a place in my heart, and Convict Lake would stand as a testament to the untamed beauty of nature and the indomitable spirit that resides within us all.
