Let me get a drink
I brought 3 friends with me out to the Savuti River area in Botswana's Okavango Delta area. We borrowed another friend's plane to get there from the capital city of Gaborone.
The journey had been long, cramped and bumpy -- far longer than we had ever thought it could be -- with four of us crammed into the single-engine aircraft for hours on end. As we stepped out of the plane, the heat hit us like a wall, but we were all happy to have arrived safe and sound.
I had brought my friends to the Savuti River because I had read that the leopards in that area had learned to fish, something that happened nowhere else on the planet. Much to my dismay, I learned that the river itself had dried up, so there were no fishing leopards to capture on film!
But there was still a lot of magic in the region, out in the wilderness so far away from any humans. The next day we headed out in the safari vehicle, and made our way to a watering hole. I had never felt so alive. As we got closer, the lions came into focus. We had stumbled upon a very large pride, something that was a rare occurrence in the wild. There were so many of them. Grandfathers and grandsons, fathers and mothers, and young lions feeling their oats. I couldn't believe my luck.
We crouched down, trying to remain as still and quiet as possible, so as not to disturb the magnificent creatures. I watched as a lioness approached the water's edge, her powerful muscles rippling beneath her golden coat. She paused for a moment, her eyes scanning the surrounding landscape, as if searching for danger.
In that moment, I felt a deep connection with this lioness. I could see the intelligence and strength in her eyes, the same qualities that I valued in myself. And yet, I also felt a sense of humility in the face of her raw, untamed power.
As she dipped her head to drink, I couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy. These lions were wild and free, living their lives on their own terms. But in our modern world, we were so far removed from this natural way of living. I felt a longing to return to that simpler, more connected existence.
We watched the lions for hours, until the sun began to set, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink. As we made our way back to the lodge, I couldn't shake the feeling that this had been a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. One that I would never forget, and would always cherish.
