African Lion on the hunt
The Okavango Delta is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana. It's known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat. It is one of Africa's last great natural sanctuaries, a pristine and rich wilderness home to vast concentrations of wildlife.
The Moremi Game Reserve occupies the east and central areas of the region. It is an exceptional example of the interaction between climatic, hydrological and biological processes. The Delta is home to some of the world's most endangered species of large mammal, such as elephant, cheetah, white rhinoceros, black rhinoceros, African wild dog and lion.
The Delta is a once in a lifetime adventure to visit, and I was lucky enough to spend 3 years in Botswana and was able to visit again and again. You can stay in luxury safari lodges costing $1400 a night, or stay in local villages, or even camp if you have the right vehicle and equipment. Regardless of how you stay, a morning game drive never disappoints.
Contrary to popular imagination, the vast African continent is not one big hot jungle. There are 4 seasons in the Delta, and the wintertime can be very cold -- especially in the morning before the sun has a chance to warm you up. Out you go in an open safari vehicle, sometimes wrapped in a blanket, but always cold.
This particular morning we came across a herd of Red Lechwe, a particular kind of antelope. This herd, ever alert for predators, were running, leaping over water. Running like that meant they were trying to get away, and sure enough, there were lions on the hunt. Lions are big and strong, and certainly fast, but not fast enough and not for long distances. The Lechwe got away.
All the other safari vehicles were going in one direction, chasing after the herd, hoping for another lion sighting. Our guide turned our vehicle around and we headed away. Weren't we going to follow and see the lions? But he knew what he was doing...we drove quickly around and came up on a short rise. And there, coming out of the mist, were the lions and we had them all to ourselves. The other vehicles caught on and headed our way. Another chase, another escape, and again, the others followed in one direction, while we headed off in another.
This time, there was no doubt our guide knew what he was doing, and yes, once again, we turned and out of the mist came this majestic lion, whom we followed most of the morning.
