Safari on the Pans
The dusty expanse of Nxai Pan stretched out before me like a canvas awaiting the master's stroke. The desert's harsh whispers mingled with the sounds of wildlife, a symphony of solitude. But tonight, the desert was not my only companion; my camera, my trusted ally, hung heavy around my neck, ready to capture the fleeting moments of life in this unforgiving land.
I had been here before, to this waterhole that stood as a solitary oasis in a sea of sand. The beating heart of Nxai Pan, it drew life like a magnet, pulling creatures great and small from the depths of the wilderness. Each night, they came, a procession of shadows against the fiery backdrop of the setting sun.
We could sit all day and watch the nature visit the watering hole, the only source of life here in the Nxai Pan, part of the famous Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats in Botswana. The park is amazing... one has to carefully drive over deep sands and hope your safari vehicle doesn't get stuck. You can camp inside the park where there are no fences, no separation between you and the wildlife.
During the day, the watering hole is a scene of furious activity, each species taking their turn to drink and bathe. Except when the ellies come - elephants run everyone else off as they want it all for themselves.
We sat at the edge of the watering hole, the sun setting behind in the distance. I have my camera in hand, eager to capture this moment. The light is perfect, the sun casting a warm glow over the giraffes as they make their way away from the water. I take the shot, feeling a sense of satisfaction wash over me.
But as I site there, watching the sun set, I can't help but feel a sense of mystery and spirituality. This is a place where the ancient and the modern meet, where the natural world and the human world intersect. I feel a deep connection to the earth and to all the creatures that call this place home.
As the sun disappears below the horizon, I pack up my camera and head back to my campsite. I know I will never forget this moment, and I will always cherish this memory of the Nxai Pan, a place of both beauty and mystery.
This place has made me to realize that in this vast world, every living being has a small part to play in preserving it and co-exist in harmony. The spirit of this place will stay with me, always reminding me of the importance of respecting and preserving the natural world.
