Patience, persistence, and timing
To create art, I start with a good photograph. That requires being in the right place at the right time (which can mean getting up long before dawn to capture the morning light, or standing in 2 feet of snow). It requires persistence. The light may not be right, or the sun is behind clouds, or the animals aren't there. So often, I return again and again until the conditions are just right. It requires patience. I've often stood with my eye to my camera lens waiting for an animal to peek out from where they're hiding, or take off and move, or look my way.
And all that is just to capture a photo. But the camera is just a tool. It can't "see" what my mind's eye sees. To bring out the art requires long hours at the computer getting the image just right.
And all of this took years of practice.

Elephants at sunset on the Chobe River
I've been on a lot of safaris in my life, but this one was different. I was after an iconic shot of elephants at sunset on the Chobe River. It was a tall order, but I was determined to get it. So I hopped on a small boat and set out into the wild, eager to see what Africa had in store for me.
As we glided along the river, I marveled at the beauty of the landscape. There were hippos wallowing in the water, their enormous bodies bobbing up and down like corks. I saw multicolored birds flitting about, and other wildlife lurking in the shadows. But I knew I had to focus on the task at hand: capturing the perfect shot of those majestic elephants.
On the first day, we saw elephants, but the sunset was a dull grey. It was disappointing, but I was undeterred. I knew that perseverance was key in this game. So I returned on the second day, and the sunset was glorious. The sky was painted in shades of pink and orange, and the river sparkled like diamonds. But there were no elephants in sight.
I was starting to feel discouraged, but I refused to give up. I returned again on the third day, and our perseverance paid off. Not only were there elephants, but the sunset was made even more glorious by the smoke from the other side of the Chobe. Farmers on the Namibian side were burning crops in the fields, and the smoke gave the sky a dramatic, almost apocalyptic, look.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I snapped photo after photo, each one more stunning than the last. The elephants were silhouetted against the orange and pink sky, their massive bodies casting long shadows across the water. It was a sight that took my breath away, and I knew that I had captured something truly special.
As we made our way back to shore, I felt a sense of satisfaction wash over me. I had achieved my goal, and it had taken three days of hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of luck. But it was worth it. This photo would be the crown jewel of my collection, and a reminder of the beauty and power of nature that I had witnessed firsthand.
I can't help but feel a pang of sadness. For these magnificent creatures face an uncertain future, their numbers dwindling in the face of poaching and habitat loss. The decline in elephant population across Africa weighs heavy on my heart, a reminder of the fragility of life in the wild.
But amidst the uncertainty, amidst the looming threat of extinction, there is still hope. For in the bonds that unite these majestic beings, in the joy that fills their hearts as they greet one another, there lies a resilience that cannot be extinguished.
As the sun rises higher in the sky, casting its golden light over the delta, I make a silent vow to do my part. To capture the beauty of this land and its inhabitants, to shine a light on the plight of those who have no voice of their own. For in the end, it is our actions, our choices, that will determine the fate of these magnificent creatures and the world they call home. This image will make a wonderful addition to your home or office.
